Author's note: I was having writers block about a week ago so Tien suggested we go out into the prairie. It was a very smart decision because the different setting really sparked some creative writing. In this piece I worked on transitions, writing metaphorically and having a strong conclusion.
The warmth spreads
through my body as I lay among the tall grass. It sways ever so slightly with
the gentle breeze and the scent of flowers tickles my nose. There's a sense of
calm in the wide expanse of the prairie. However, every once in awhile a gust of
wind catches the simple plants off guard, and they are thrust upon one another,
dancing with the wind.
Off in the east I
see the tress that are struggling to survive with the threatening chance of an
early winter. Their leaves fall as I watch; Yellow, orange, green and brown,
each one is different. Some tress have already given up, accepting defeat.
Others stand strong, holding their ground and keeping every last one of their
leaves healthy and green.
The sun sets in a
foggy haze off in the west with a vibrant red-orange sky as a backdrop. It's
truly remarkable, and I only wish I had brought my camera. Unfortunately the
very sun that captures my heart is the signal that tells me to go home.
However, the prairie is my home away from home. A place where I feel
comfortable and at peace. I have never shared this haven with anyone. I feel as
if the beauty would disappear if the quiet was disrupted. I have chosen nature
as my favorite companion, and nature has welcomed me.
